In October 1917, a Bolshevik revolution took place in Petersburg and a new bolshevik government was established in Russia. The peoples of the South Caucasus refused to recognize this government, and as a result, three independent republics were formed here. One of them was the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan. The Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan, which was proclaimed on May 28, 1918, existed only 23 months. On April 28, 1920, Azerbaijan was occupied by Bolshevik Russia.
