“Çırpınırdı Karadeniz” Şairi Ahmed Cevad’ın Makalelerinde Karadeniz Bölgesi

Afina Barmanbay · Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University Journal of Social Sciences, 2024

Collection summary

A scholarly article examining the Azerbaijani poet Ahmed Javad's 1914-1918 relief work for the Baku Muslim Benevolent Society in the Black Sea region and his writings about it.

Afina Barmanbay's article studies Ahmed Javad, author of the poem "Çırpınırdı Karadeniz," and his First World War-era work as an active member of the Batumi branch of the Baku Muslim Benevolent Society. It reviews his relief activities across Adjara, Artvin, Rize, Trabzon, Ardahan, Kars, Erzurum and Abkhazia, along with his newspaper writings—reports, news items and appeals for mobilization. Though not directly about the Army of Islam's 1918 campaign, it provides contextual background on Azerbaijani-Ottoman cultural solidarity that preceded and accompanied the events of 1918.

The source's own abstract

Birinci Dünya Savaşı başlar başlamaz Çarlık Rusya’ya bağlı topraklardaki Müslümanların sivil toplum kurumları Osmanlı Devleti için seferber olmuşlardır. Bakü Müslüman Cemiyet-i Hayriyesi bu amaçla faaliyet gösteren kurumların başında gelmektedir. Çırpınırdı Karadeniz türküsünün söz yazarı olan ünlü şair Ahmed Cevad, 1914-1918 yıllarında bu hayır kurumunda görev almıştır. As an active member of the branch in Batumi, he traveled from village to village and carried out aid activities in the occupied regions of the Ottoman Empire such as Artvin, Rize, Trabzon, Ardahan, Kars and Erzurum. The articles the poet wrote for newspapers in these years shed light on the historical, social, and political life of the period. These articles, written for purposes such as reports, documentaries, news, encouragement, and invitations to mobilization for aid, also attract attention with their literary power. The Black Sea region constitutes a very important part of Ahmed Javad's life and art. In our study, detailed information on this issue was pointed out and the poet's articles mentioning regions such as Adjara, Artvin, Rize, Trabzon and Abkhazia were discussed.
