This photograph by British war photographer Ariel Varges shows one of the first British Army guns being manhandled down a gangplank at the port of Baku. It documents the arrival and defensive preparations of British forces (Dunsterforce) in the summer of 1918. It offers visual evidence of the opposing military presence in the city during the Caucasus Islamic Army's advance on Baku.
