Collection summary

An encyclopedia entry by Leslie Missen on the British Dunsterforce, published in vol. IX of the Marshall Cavendish Illustrated Encyclopedia of WWI (1984).

Published in volume IX of Marshall Cavendish's illustrated WWI encyclopedia, this English-language entry treats Dunsterforce, the British expeditionary detachment led by General Dunsterville. In the summer of 1918 Dunsterforce moved through Persia to Baku in an attempt to keep the oil fields out of Ottoman-Azerbaijani hands, becoming one of the principal opponents of the Army of Islam during the Baku campaign. For the collection it offers the British-side perspective on the siege of Baku and the events leading to the city's capture on 15 September 1918.
