Minahanım Esedli's 2007 English article examines, on the basis of archival sources, the socio-political, scholarly and religious thought of Akhund Yusif Ziya Talibzade, elder brother of the Azerbaijani classic Abdulla Şaiq, and his activity in Turkey: his presentation of a Koran to the Ottoman sultan, his participation in the Balkan War and the First World War, and his role in the Caucasus Islamic Army. One of the rare studies on the army's Azerbaijani cleric-officer figures.
