Published in New York by Philosophical Library in 1951, Kazemzadeh's book traces the state-building efforts of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia and the rivalry of the great powers in the region from the collapse of the Russian Empire to Sovietization. It remains a foundational English-language account of the period covering the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, Ottoman intervention, the campaign of the Army of Islam and the contest for Baku in 1918. It is included in the collection as a classic monograph providing the wider regional and diplomatic context of the 1918 events.
